Escape and Repent

Artist's statement:

Temptation, trust, control, and shame are explored.

We can cover our eyes, but our hearts will know all.

Every choice contains an experience and a consequence. To choose diversion from the everyday, is to take a lifetime to process it.

September 2009 - Calgary, AB

From the series "The Passions of Alicia"

14" X 36" Ink-Jet print on archival paper from a signed, limited edition of twenty.

Director's comments:

I am so pleased to be able to present this inspiring young artist's work.

"Escape and Repent" extends Hoogveld's strong vision as the third in her series "The Passions of Alicia".

With a cunning wisdom beyond her 24 years, she illustrates in this strong panoramic image the modern themes of alienation, indifference, and sexuality that is bounded by learned and imposed behaviors.

Keeping in mind the entire series are self-portraits, the artist reminds us that behind every door in an anonymous hotel hallway lies another story, waiting to be told.

The icy stillness in the center photo, with the young man blindfolded hands behind his back, conjures up both the fears and excitement that pervade many bedrooms when couples explore their inner secrets and passions.

With seven new works being readied to complete this series of erotic photographs, one can only anticipate in which direction this powerful artist will turn next in her journey.
